🚨 Fell-walking emergency procedure

1

Dial 999

Ask for Police → "Mountain Rescue". The 999 call activates the local MR team via pager.

2

Your location

What3Words or OS Locate (free apps, work offline). Both pinpoint to ~3 m.

3

Casualty + party info

How many people, injury type, kit you have, time you've been there.

4

Stay put if safe

If one person stays with the casualty, a spare person can walk down to a start point / village to summon help — but call 999 first.

🎒 Before you set off — practical fell-walking prep

At the start point

  • Check parking restrictions — many starts are pay-and-display (NT car parks especially) · arrive early in summer
  • Lock your car · don't leave valuables visible · break-ins do happen
  • Some starts have NO toilet — use a TIC or pub before
  • Limited mobile signal at remote starts (Wasdale, Mardale, Ennerdale)
  • Tell someone the route before signal disappears

Weather + planning

  • Met Office Mountain Forecast — mountain.metoffice.gov.uk
  • Yr.no for hour-by-hour second opinion
  • Mountain-forecast.com — peak-specific forecasts
  • The Lakes can change weather in 30 minutes — pack as if it might
  • Cloud base < summit altitude = navigation hard, casualties common
  • If you can't navigate in mist, don't go above the cloud base

About Wainwright + the 214 fells

Alfred Wainwright

Lancastrian council accountant who moved to Kendal in 1941. Wrote and illustrated the seven Pictorial Guides to the Lakeland Fells over 13 years (1955–66), producing every page in his own hand. The books are still in print and the fells he selected are still the canonical list.

The 214 fells

Wainwright chose 214 specific summits across the Lake District. Some appear in multiple books (boundary fells). "Doing the Wainwrights" — bagging all 214 — is a multi-year goal for many walkers. Roughly 700 people complete the round each year per Long-Distance Walkers Association estimates.
